Limagrain, progress as a source of solutions
By 2050 the world population is expected to reach 10 billion inhabitants. At the same time and to meet this growth in population, agriculture will need to increase its production by more than 60% while focusing on quality in a context of increasing resource scarcity and climate change. Limagrain intends to make progress in agriculture by proposing the world's farmers with innovative solutions based on plant genetics and that contribute to the evolution of agricultural production systems towards better agronomic and environmental performances.

For Limagrain, seeds are a true concentrate of solutions that will enable farmers to meet societal expectations in terms of food quality and the preservation of the planet.
Innovation in plant varieties to meet societal expectations

As the leading non-agrochemical seeds company, Limagrain relies on its capacity to innovate in plant breeding to provide high-performance and sustainable solutions for all forms of agriculture. Each year the Group invests a significant and growing share of its resources in research, to which in 2019-2020, Limagrain devoted 16.7% of its revenue from seed sales, or 260 million euros. Research teams are particularly interested in crop yields, but also in solutions to support agriculture in its transition and to contribute to the evolution of agricultural production systems towards better agronomic and environmental performances.

Plant breeding: a solution for the reduction of chemical products
All of the Group's Business Units propose innovations to their customers. This is the case, for example, of Vilmorin-Mikado, world leader in carrots, which has developed TERAPUR, a plant that naturally sanitizes soils by trapping the cyst nematode Heterodera carotae. These parasites are present in the soil and have a considerable impact on producers' yields, leading to a loss of up to 90% in their harvest.

TERAPUR is a variety not intended for consumption, but to be used as a trap crop. This innovation should enable the French carrot industry to continue to produce despite the ban on dichloropropene. TERAPUR, representing nearly 20 years of research with partners in the industry, was awarded the SIVAL 2021 Gold Medal in the "Varietal Innovation" category.

To accompany European corn growers faced with the risk of drought that can cause up to 80% yield loss, Limagrain Europe has developed HYDRANEO, a global approach to managing water stress. HYDRANEO combines a risk diagnosis for the plot, a varietal recommendation and agronomic advice to ensure maximum yield security under stress conditions. Deployment of HYDRANEO has been extended to 16 countries over the last 3 years. Today 22 varieties have been labeled, representing almost 40% of Limagrain Europe's grain corn volumes.

Useful plant - Mustard
Home gardeners are not to be outdone and can also benefit from innovations! Vilmorin Jardin now offers natural solutions for enriching the soil with a wide range of useful plants, grown to nourish, care for and embellish the garden. The plants should be left to grow until they flower, then crushed and buried in the soil. An example of a useful plant in the vegetable garden is the organic Flemish Bio alfalfa, a drought and frost resistant variety that stops weed growth. White mustard, on the other hand, contributes to the supply of phosphorus and sulphur to the soil. These plants, which have specific assets, also share the same benefits: they help to optimize the fertility of the soil, protect the soil surface against drying out and attract pollinating insects, thus reconciling flora and fauna.

Present in 57 countries, Limagrain is committed to breeding new varieties to enable the world's farmers to make a decent living from their production and to feed their contemporaries. Because agriculture is not a problem but a source of solutions.
