Clearfield sunflower
Whatever the plant, weed control is a vital element in crop success. For sunflower, by using Clearfield technology it is possible to make a variety naturally resistant to a weed-killer that controls most weeds affecting this species, but also its main parasite (broomrape) at its younger stages, in growing areas (Southern Europe) concerned by this problem. This is a considerable step forward in growing sunflower, and has been used successfully for four years in Eastern Europe. For example, one third of the market in Hungary and Turkey now uses this technology. A precursor in this technology, LG today holds second position for Clearfield sunflower in Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. Soltis1 very soon integrated this major innovation in its breeding programs. By converting its elite lines very early on Soltis was one of the first to register, for official trials, high performance hybrids resistant to this weed-killer. After a launch in Spain in fiscal year 2008/2009, certification of the weed killer in France means that LG can introduce its new Clearfield hybrids on its domestic market. We can safely bet that it will be a success here too.
