“In France, the "beetroot chain", mainly located in the county of Loiret, was on the way out because of rhizomania, which contaminates soils. The only solution was to move elsewhere into uncontaminated areas. However a resistance gene had already been identified in sugar beet. Producers and cooking companies asked Vilmorin to pick up on the research initiated by INRA (French public research) and then abandoned. In 2008, after 12 years of research and the use of molecular marking, Vilmorin registered its first resistant varieties: Grenade and Redval. In two years, they conquered 70% of the market because of their resistance, but also their qualities. This success story enabled Vilmorin to open up a worldwide beetroot breeding program.”
