The world production of melons is around 25 million tons per year. They vary according to shape, size, appearance and color of flesh. This immense diversity creates highly distinct markets throughout the world.
The melon family has a wealth of different types. The globe-shaped Cantaloupe melon weighing around 1 kilo with orange flesh, is particularly popular in France. The Western Shipper Cantaloupe, a globe-shaped melon covered with thick netting is exclusively intended for the American market. Today it is being replaced by the Harper LSL, the first commercial success of the HM-Clause Business Unit, thanks to its productivity, better conservation, internal quality and grouped production. The Piel de Sapo, an elongated melon with a green colored skin, dark spots and white flesh, is king in Spain. Among other popular varieties one can find the elongated Italian netted melon, in fact very heavily netted, with pronounced grooves, and weighing up to 2.5 kilos.
And so it is easier to understand why the melon, an international crop, eaten in all shapes and sizes all year round, is a major species for Limagrain.
