Nickerson-Zwaan Ukraine : a bridge to the East

With its vast expanses of arable land, among the most fertile in the world, a favorable climate and a longstanding rural farming tradition, Ukraine, and its 42 million hectares of farmland, has the potential of meeting the country's food needs. Well before the opening of its Kiev subsidiary, Nickerson-Zwaan was already successfully commercializing vegetable seeds through a local network of distributors.


Based on this knowledge of the market, and in order to reinforce its positions, Nickerson-Zwaan Ukraine was created to gain greater control over strategic stakes on the Ukrainian market, adapt to changes, support producers and industries over the long term and, finally, to take advantage of opportunities in a region with a real potential for growth.


Perfectly adapted genetic resources


Ukrainian research in genetics, while often of exceptional quality, has difficulty translating its results in terms of commercial distribution. This is why the country has opened its doors to foreign certified seeds. The main activities of Nickerson-Zwaan consist in importing vegetable seeds, distributing them on the domestic market, as well as providing its customers with practical and active support. However, Nickerson-Zwaan, which proposes perfectly adapted genetics for Eastern European needs, is also actively investing in development and breeding trials, particularly in strategic species like onion, cabbage, tomato and watermelon. With the introduction of F1 hybrids, carrots also represent a strong potential.


Since its creation, Nickerson-Zwaan Ukraine has energetically developed its activities. It has expanded its range and increased the number of brands distributed exclusively via the Ukrainian platform to three: Nickerson-Zwaan, Hazera and Vilmorin. On a national level, Nickerson-Zwaan Ukraine has already successfully launched several varieties on different segments of the market. For example, Nickerson-Zwaan was the first company to commercialize Hazera's seedless watermelon varieties - Sagi F1 and Extazy F1 - on a large scale in Ukraine.


Nickerson-Zwaan Ukraine, and its many opportunities, will serve as a stepping-stone and platform for future development in other countries within the Commonwealth of Independent States (former Soviet Union).
